More then just Great Food…

Our farm operations serve two distinct purposes.

• Provide our community with sustainable, healthy, locally produced food.
• While teaching others to do the same.

While we strongly believe it is important to grow healthy, sustainable, locally produced food, we also see that we will never be able to meet that need alone. It is only through education that we hope to affect a truly positive change in our communities.

•  Many people do not take the time to really understand where the foods they eat come from. Large retailers often consider foods to be locally produced if they are sourced within 200 miles of the store.
• Huge corporate farms have had a devastating effect on our environment and the ability of small local farmers to compete.
• Much of our ability to grow foods sustainably, on a local level, has been lost in the last seventy years, but Saco River Farms is working to change that trend.

We saw a need to create hands on learning environments to demonstrate a variety of small farming techniques which could easily be applied to urban, suburban, homestead or even small farmstead use.

It is our passion at Saco River Farms to grow a new generation of growers.

 

Our students and interns are immersed in a hands on, self directed learning environment, where they are free to choose as many individual topics as they would like to Dig into! We offer an immense reading library onsite, and with the expansion of our online resources, the sky is the limit for how far the programs can reach.

 

One unique aspect of our programs is that our students don’t simply get their hands dirty in the garden, but instead experience what it really means to live on a working farmstead. Our students become part of the family and engage in all farm activities.

Working closely with Field Of Zion International, Inc.  we are able to offer hands on educational training through internships, and serving as a WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) host farm.

Saco River Farms offers a diverse array of educational opportunities including a working farmstead, dairy, CSA  and market garden.

In the coming years we hope to expand our programs at the Steep Falls farm, as well as establish additional small sustainable farm training facilities in as many communities as possible, creating educational opportunities, providing jobs, and helping to protect food security for future generations.

When our Interactive Farmstead and learning center is complete we will be able to host up to 64 students per season for two weeks or longer.
