Why Locally Sourced, Organic Seedlings
We work with trusted (and verified) local organic farmers and producers to provide our customers with MOFGA certified, non-GMO seedlings grown from non-treated seeds with absolutely no chemical fertilizers. We grow and source many popular and lesser-known varieties of everyone’s favorite seasonal organic vegetables, herb, and flowers. Locally grown, these Maine-hardy seedlings are ready for your garden!
Many people do not realize that buying seedlings that are not grown locally can do more harm than good in the long run. Most seedlings from the big box stores, while perhaps less expensive, are grown on more southern climates where they can be ready faster. However, one important key to remember is that these plants often carry plant diseases like blight, which can not survive in Maine winters. Thus by bringing these plants into your garden, you take a strong risk of infecting your own plants as well as those of your neighbors! This practice causes crop failures and lost revenue for farmers and backyard gardeners alike!
Additionally, as with any USDA Organic labeled product, we must remember that not all states follow the same organic standards. The only way to be really sure what goes into your organic seedlings is to know your farmer. As always, “Know your farmer…Know your food!”
Planting Tips for Happy, Healthy Organic Seedlings
Seedling Care and When to Plant
Keep seedlings compact and sturdy by giving them adequate light and water. Be careful not to overwater! Feel the soil surface of seedling containers. If it feels moist, do not water.
Cool Weather Crops: Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Onions, Collards, Kale, Chard
Prepare to put plants into the garden up to 4 weeks before the date of last frost. After picking-up seedlings, harden-off plants for 7-10 days prior to planting outdoors.
Warm Weather Crops: Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Leeks, Cucumbers, Squash, Melons, Herbs
Begin hardening-off transplants in a protected outdoor area one week before the average date of last frost, then plant at your convenience!
*To harden-off seedlings, place plants outdoors in a sheltered spot (away from direct sun and wind) for a couple of hours each day. Increase exposure for 7-10 or until you’re ready to plant outdoors!
Our Recommendations
To boost the health and productivity of your organic seedlings, we recommend feeding plants with organic products such as Coop Poop or Neptunes Harvest Organic fertilizer.
