Farmstead Assistant: Year Round Position
Farmstead Assistants at Saco River Farms help insure that our animals are treated to the best conditions we can give them. Duties may include:
- General care and feeding of goats, pigs, chickens, ducks
- stall maintenance
- compost management
- Building and other maintenance
- fence/paddock maintenance
After proper training, additional hours/benefits will be available for Farmstead Assistants who wish to help out occasionally with other duties as needed including:
- Assisting customers
- Market/cashier/stocking
- Vegetable & fruit production/harvesting
- Cheese making, milking and other dairy related chores.
- Poultry processing
Part time, 10-30 hours per week, $14-$19/hour based upon experience and performance. Flexible hours. 15% Employee discount when working over 10 hours/week.
Live in Assistant Farmstead Manager: Year Round Position
We have a unique opportunity for an onsite assistant farmstead manager. The ideal candidate would be able to meet all requirements of the farmstead assistant listed above, as well as:
- Hold a strong desire to be a long term part of our team & community at Saco River Farms.
- Be desirous to live in close proximity of a working farm setting.
- Have at least 2 seasons of prior food farming experience.
- Priority candidates will have some livestock experience.
- Be willing to supervise/direct other employees as needed.
- Be flexible and willing to cover shifts as needed, and lend a hand when asked.
- With training, gain familiarity with most basic farm operations at Saco River Farms.
- Have a strong interest in dairy and livestock management.
- Ideally have an interest in diary, cheese making and/or other products which we produce.
- Hold a sincere interest in producing healthy foods.
- Be desirous and willing to learn new homestead/farmstead skills.
Duties in addition to those listed above:
- Milking
- Creamery related tasks including proper cleaning of equipment and facility.
- plant, weed, harvest, maintain organic vegetables and fruits.
- Farm planning and record keeping.
- Daily farm chores relating to animal production.
- Farm market duties as assigned.
Requirements & Benefits:
- 12 – 18 month work contract mandatory.
- Part/full time, Minimum 25 hours/week. Maximum 50 hours week on occasion. Hours are based on weekly needs.
- $14-$18/hour based upon experience and performance.

- On site housing features: located on 2nd floor of barn, heated private bedroom with separate shared bath/kitchen/dining space. Wifi, furnished bedroom (single bed, desk, office chair, refrigerator, shelving, lamp, clock, smart TV, dresser, night stand, etc.) Shared furnished space includes: Shower, composting toilet, kitchenette, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, couch, dining table, etc. Parking for 1 car, as well as separate shared heated 1/2 bath w/flush toilet.
- Other shared space includes (with permission) access to outdoor pool, pavilion.

Dairy/Creamery Assistant: Year Round
As a dairy/creamery assistant at Saco River Farms you will help us produce the best goat’s milk products in the state of Maine! Ideal individuals for this position are those who:
- love animals, especially goats
- are comfortable working closely around large animals
- understand that while we love our goats, these animals have a specific role to play. We expect both our human team members and our goats to be respectful that there is a time to work and a time to play. Those looking for a job playing with goats should respectfully volunteer instead.
- are physically capable of lifting 60 lbs repeated.
- are hard workers and have cheerful attitude.
- understand this is a food related business and as such must be diligent about cleanliness and food safety at all times.
- Can work well supervised or unsupervised, alone or with a team.
Currently we are looking for flexible individuals who live on, or close to the farm. Our primary need at this time is to cover milking shifts of 2-4 hours each. Shifts are approximately 7:00-10 am, and 3:30-6:30 pm daily. Longer shifts may be available for qualified applicants willing to do a variety of on farm work. Applicants will be expected to be able to cover at least 3 shifts weekly. Schedules are generally fixed from week to week, but flexible in days and hours available.

This is not a seasonal position.
Produce Assistant: Seasonal June-October
Produce assistants at Saco River Farms help with all aspects of growing organic seedlings, vegetables and fruits. Duties include: Seeding, bed maintenance and weeding, planting, harvesting and packing. Ideal individuals for this position are those who:
- Enjoy working with plants and food.
- are physically capable of lifting 60 lbs repeated.
- are hard workers and have cheerful attitude.
- understand this is a food related business and as such must be diligent about cleanliness and food safety at all times.
- Can work well supervised or unsupervised, alone or with a team.
15-30 hours per week, $14-17/hour based upon experience and performance. Flexible hours. Employee discounts. On site housing may be available on an individual basis.
