Does in Milk for sale
Our inventory of Nubian goats for sale at Saco River Farms often includes does “In Milk“. These does are currently in a milk cycle and ready to produce great tasting goat milk.
Yearling Nubian goats are also available for sale at Saco River Farms. These does are “dry” meaning they are not currently producing milk. They are between 1-2 years old, ready to breed and larger than goat kids. Yearling Nubian does for sale average 80-100 lbs. and will continue to grow to full size (usually by age 3). Yearling does are a good choice if you are looking for a dairy goat but don’t want to wait 2 years for a kid to produce milk.
One of the most cost effective options for starting a small goat herd is to purchase a pregnant Nubian doe. Typically Nubians produce 1-4 kids each kidding, with 2 being the average. The cost of a bred doe can be significantly cheaper than buying a doe and kid separately. Many times a breeder will offer to breed the doe before purchase, or the goat may already be bred and waiting to kid.
Pregnant Nubian goats for sale at Saco River Farms can be a great way to build your homestead herd. Pregnant yearling does are typically not in milk. However we often have older retiring does which can still be bred successfully.
Everyone loves Goat Kids! These playful and adorable little goat kids are sure to be a hit on your farm. Our herd of Nubian goats for sale at Saco River Farms includes many goat kids for sale every year.
We offer doeling, buckling and whether (neutered male) goats for sale.
Saco River Farms offers both registered Nubian goat kids and unregistered “American Nubians” The only difference is a traceable pedigree. Because of the associated costs of registration, the price of registered goats is higher. Please be aware that pedigree does not guarantee a quality goat or high milk production.
All our goat kids are weaned from milk and at least 20 lbs. Sorry, we do not sell bottle babies.
All our goat kids are disbudded, meaning their horns have been removed. An important consideration when buying goats is horns or no horns. In our opinion, horns pose a significant danger to people, pets, and other barnyard friends. They also endanger the animal by making entrapment situations much more common.

Saco River Farms in Steep Falls, Maine has a long track record for breeding quality Nubian dairy goats. As an operating Maine licensed Goat Dairy, we are constantly working to improve our herd. We understand the needs of small homestead farmers, and more importantly the differences between working and show animals.
Our focus at Saco River Farms is dairy, not the show ring! We do not show our goats. You won’t find us at the fairs, because we’re too busy making the goat milk, cheese and other dairy products our customers love. We believe that value is as important as quality. Saco River Farms sells both registered and unregistered Nubian Goats. After all, a pedigree does not guarantee a great milker.
Why buy a Nubian Dairy Goat?
Nubians are a large breed dairy goat making them ideal for hand milking, something to consider if you are thinking of getting into dairy. Dwarf goats, or other goats with small teats can be very difficult to milk out quickly by hand, especially for people with large hands. Other considerations when choosing a breed are milk flavor, quantity per animal, and butterfat content.
The Nubian goats we sell will average 1.25 gallons milk per day (peak) as nearly full grown second fresheners (birthing). The milk is rich and creamy, containing 5-6% butterfat. Milk flavor is based on a number of factors, but goats fed a consistent diet of high quality grain and hay should always produce a nice tasting milk. Off flavor milk in goats generally is a result of processing (pasteurizing, heat treating, etc. ), poor handling of the milk and or diet.
Great Tasting Goat Milk
Our customers rave about our goat milk. In fact many people have blind tasted our raw goat milk and chosen it over cow milk time and time again. A note of caution: Generally the only people who do not like our milk are those used to drinking skim or 1%. If this is you, another breed might be a better choice. Nubian goat milk is very rich. Those who enjoy whole milk will be delighted by the creaminess. Those that do not, may find it too heavy.
Pasture raised Goats for Meat
Saco River Farms is also a great local source for whole live goats for meat. We sell various size goats to meet your needs, however availability is limited and orders for processed goats need to be made well in advance. We do not offer on farm goat processing, but can give the name of a local butcher.

The cost of goats varies greatly, depending on quality, age, size and purpose of the animal. When considering buying a goat please keep the following in mind:
Goats are herding animals. Two or more goats are needed to insure their long term success.
Keeping goats requires sturdy fencing. Goats are great escape artists.
Goats require adequate shelter from weather.
Dairy goats in milk are a big commitment. It is much easier to get a friend to house sit for your cat, then to milk your goats when you are away!
Despite popular opinion, goats are pretty picky about what they eat.
Be sure to do a lot of research learning about how to care for goats before jumping in.
DO NOT BUY GOAT KIDS BEFORE THEY ARE FINISHED WEANING!!! Feeding kids goat milk and/or formula is very expensive and demanding.
